Zion National Park: Five tips for hiking with children

Want to enjoy a fun hiking adventure with your children this spring or summer?  Zion National Park near Springdale Utah is the odds on favorite destination.  Children will enjoy the varied topography in the region, the unique animals, beautiful wild flowers and other plants and hiking trails to suit even the youngest energy level.  As you plan your trip, keep these five ideas in mind.

1.  Having a good time is the key so plan your hike with care.  Have the right equipment.  Equipment for Zions Park hiking?  Yes, children need to have the proper shoes, be covered in sun screen, and carry their own water bottle.  Remember with children flexibility is a must, be willing to adjust your hike to whether the children got a good night's sleep or if you plan to go in the "heat" of the day.  Is your child going to carry a small backpack or are you are going to carry all your hiking needs?  Take some neighborhood pre-hikes with your children, so the idea for hiking trips is familiar and enjoyable.  If you have very young children you might want to include a kid carrier for when your son or daughter gets tired on one of the many Zion trails.  Remember if your child is in diapers, you must pack it in and pack it out, sanitary wipes and baggies are a must.  And a tip for those just beginning the Zion hiking process with your children, "outside dirt is clean dirt" and your child will get dirty, so be prepared.  Make sure to keep your children under your watchful eye and supervised at all time, Zion does have a variety of insects and animals, and even though some of the hiking trails may be paved, children can quickly wander away and get lost.

2.  Safety tips.  Be aware.  The key to a fun hike is safety, so be sure to bring your first aid kit for those accidental trips, brushes with cactus, or creams for rashes.  Zions gets hot in the summer and so sunscreen and water are a must.  Other items you might want to have on hand are liquid antihistamine, plenty of adhesive bandages, tweezers to remove unwanted  slivers or ticks, moleskin for blisters, Tylenol and/or ibuprofen (your doctor may have travel sample packs) for the aches and pains, and any of your child's specific medicines.  Remember small children take about three times as many steps for every one of yours, so let them set the pace and be willing to stop when they are tired or need a rest.

3.  What to bring on your Zion Park hike?  Bear in mind when children run and have fun, they get hungry, so easy to carry snacks are a required item.  Places to buy water, food and snacks are far between in Zion Park, so remember to carry in and carry garbage out of the park.  Springdale Utah is just outside the park entrance and has many stores for forgotten or needed items.  In and around the park are numerous Zion Park lodging areas and campgrounds, so make your trip last several days.  Utah's Zions is noted for its beautiful weather and sun.  The park is open all year round and each of the seasons offers a different and exciting venue in their own way, however summer is the hands on favorite because of the clean air views of the brilliant red cliffs.  If you're planning a spring trip, the west entrance might be warmer, while the east entrance experiences winter/spring snow storms.  Daytime temperatures range from 70 to 105 degrees, but drop to 45 to 75 degrees at night.  If you're planning a night hike, be sure to take along a sweater, it may seem cooler than it really is.

4.  Know your park beforehand.  Taking a little time to research about Zions National Park, Springdale Utah and Zion Park Lodging will allow you to really enjoy what you are seeing.  You might want to plan to take in one of the many park programs like the Park Junior Ranger Program for children age 5-12, or begin your trip early with the on line Geodetectives series which has information and ideas for first grade through 12th grade.  Other ideas include the wildflower classes, astronomy lovers, and the evening programs in the South Campground amphitheater and Visitor's Center.  Zion Park is home to 75 species of mammals and 265 species of birds including Peregrine falcons, eagles, wild turkeys, owls and quail.  Reptiles still roam the park in large varieties, not to mention if you'd like to fish, there are 8 different fish in Zion park waters.

5.  Which Zion Park hikes are best.  There are a wide variety of hiking trails within the park, but it's a good idea to make sure you get up to the minute trail information from Zion Park Rangers.  Some hikes require permits and are extremely difficult for young children.  One of the best trails for children, bikes, wheelchairs, strollers or large groups is the 3.5 mile Pa'rus Trail.  This trail winds along the Virgin River, traversing over bridges and through the lower Zion Canyon.  Elevation for this area is about 4,000 feet and it's very hot in the summer.  This is the only trail in the park which allows dogs, on leash only, and bikes.  The Canyon Overlook is a one mile round trip hike and has a high elevation view of the park.  Hikers will travel a natural rock path and has some unique ferns growing in hidden alcoves.  The top view is of the impressive Zion Switchbacks and Pine Creek Canyon.
