is it weird that my dog is eating a lot?!?
My dog when i used to feed her wellness literally only ate probably a quarter of a cup a day which is once (my dog is 10lb) if i'm lucky, or else it's like once every 2 days. She never seems healthy and never likes eating, but treats she'll eat right away. But again very picky about it. Recently, my dog has been diagnosed with IBD, inflammable bowed disease, which would mean the food she was eating actually hurt her. So my vet prescribed me a prescription diet. Suddenly now she eats 3 times a day, and never do i have to force her like i usually do. Is this a good thing? Or is this a sign of something happening.
Is she doing it because now her stomach feels better, this is how much she would actually eat, or is there an underlying problem?
Also she has spinal arthritis, can that be the reason?!
She also farts a lot lately too.
dogs will eat anything in front of them, they will eat until they burst, they are that stupid.

Dog Teeth Cleaning Gel: Salmon or Mint?
There are safer and more effective dog teeth cleaning products now available on the market for canine owners. These products do not have the same side effects and possible consequences as does the most common form of cleaning dog teeth known as teeth scaling. This procedure is done in the vet's office and offers substantial risk, especially for older dogs.
The canine teeth cleaning gel on the market today often comes in two flavors. This option probably has more to do with the pet owners than it does the dogs' preferences. Felines are another story, but most dogs are not picky at all when it comes to anything that "might" be some kind of food. Humans have a difficult time with this concept. People are very into "flavor" of their foods and even their own toothpastes they use for their teeth.
Basically, there are 2 flavors available on the market today: mint and salmon oil
It may seem odd that a dog would be interested in anything "mint" flavored, but most of them never raise an eyebrow when the opportunity arises to have it in their mouths. Actually, successfully cleaning a canine's teeth with an all natural and safe gel product, whether it be a spray or a gel, depends much more on how the owner approaches the procedure. If the canine owner goes too fast in the beginning and causes the cleaning process to become too stressful, the procedure in the future can be all but a lost cause.
Although the flavor does not matter with respect to how easy of process the cleaning is for your canine, there can be a slight difference in the effectiveness of the cleaning gel or spray. It is thought that the salmon oil flavor may actually be more effective in removing tartar from the canine's teeth.
By the way, regardless of the type of dog toothpaste you choose, always remember that it is vital to the success of the procedure that the dog not eat or drink anything for at least a half hour after the cleaning. Actually, it is best to do the cleaning at night before bed time and not allow the canine to have any water or food before going to sleep.
This will ensure the gel or spray time to effectively dissolve the plaque on the teeth much more rapidly. Additionally, it is thought that twice a day tooth cleanings in the early days. This will provide the quickest possible dissolving of the teeth plaque.
Some owners report better results with the salmon oil flavor. The reason for this is that the salmon may in fact help remove the tooth plaque at a quicker rate than other flavoring does. If this is the case, it is definitely suggested that dogs use the salmon flavor version of the dog teeth cleaning toothpastes.
If one has a choice, always select the oil version of the flavor if at all possible. Most of the products available today offer that option for their dog teeth cleaning products.

Does anyone have experience with Hydrotherapy for Dogs?
My dog needs surgery on her knee to correct a luxating patella. I was originally against surgery because I specialize in natural/holistic treatments, but her LP is caused by an anatomical deformity and cannot be helped with natural treatment because her knee cap is physically in the wrong place. Therefore, she needs surgery to enable her to walk.
Post surgery, and after her sutures are removed, I want to use hydrotherapy to help prevent muscle deterioration without any joint impact. I have experience with hydrotherapy on arthritic dogs; however, I have not done it post surgery and know that things should be taken much slower. Has anyone ever used hydrotherapy on a post surgery dog? How long did you wait? How long were the sessions? And which would be better: under water treadmill or swimming with a life vest? Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks!
chiwiz15:
Thanks. Thats sooo true! I will definitely try that as well
A massage ttherapist would do wonders for a post surgical pooch. It did mine and they love it!

Foods Dogs Should Not Eat: Are You Giving Your Pet Dangerous Foods for Dogs?
Avoid giving your pet any of these dangerous foods for dogs. They could be toxic for your animal, and comprise a list of foods that dogs should not eat.
I always knew there were foods that dogs should not eat. But a recent story I watched on the TV news got me thinking even more about what makes up the list of dangerous foods for dogs.
The report was about a black Lab that got into his master's purse and ate some TicTacs™. Of particular concern was a certain ingredient that is found in TicTacs™, Tums™, and other sugar free candies.
To be honest, I'm not sure if my big French Sheep Dog would eat breathmints if I put them in her food dish (and believe me, there are times I thought about it!) I kind of think she would turn her nose up at them – but, then, some dogs have a sweet tooth.
I'm now glad I never offered them to her.
It all seems kind of funny, a dog sneaking a breathmint. Kind of like a kid smoking behind the barn and trying to cover his breath. The difference is, this dog nearly died.
The substance xylitol, which is considered natural and an acceptable sugar substitute for humans, affects a dog's liver, as well as its insulin levels.
If you ever become tempted to hide your dog's breath with a breathmint, keep this in mind. Add them to the list of foods dogs should not eat.
The National Animal Poison Control Center can be reached at 1-888-4435. Call them if you think your dog has eaten anything that includes xylitol.
What are some of the other dangerous foods for dogs? There are several items on the list of. See how many you know.
Foods Dogs Should Not Eat:
Alcoholic Beverages
Avocado
Coffee/chocolate
Macadamia nuts
Raisins and Grapes
Garlic & Onions
Salt
Yeast dough
Moldy and spoiled food (again -- goes without saying)
Raw salmon
This is just a simple list to begin with. If you know of other foods that should be included, please make a comment on our Dog Blog! Just scroll down to the blog post: Foods Dogs Should not Eat. While you are there, look at the TV clip from Martha Stewart's TV show. She is interviewing a vet about this very subject.

How do I know if my dog has epilepsy?
I have a Lab/Pointer mix, who is 7-8 yrs old. I have had her for two years, and as far as I know the previous 5 years she was treated well (aside from being left alone way too much), although I have no idea if she had any traumatic experiences as a puppy. She is well trained, happy and obedient.
Last night she had what seems obvious to me to have been a seizure. She moved close to me as if she were frightened (we were watching a loud scene in a movie at the time, so at first I didn't think anything of it). A moment later I put my hand on her to comfort her, and she was still shaking. I looked at her closely and realized she was tense all over, her paws contorted and digging into the rug, breathing abnormally and foaming/salivating heavily.
She has an appointment at the vet to have bloodwork done, and is due for her annual, anyway. As far as I know she has no history of seizures. Is this an isolated incident, or could she have epilepsy develop now?
It is not too late for epilepsy to develop, so that is definitely a possibility. However, other problems certainly will cause seizures in a little bit older dog. They include
1) toxin exposure (i.e. chronic lead toxicity, antifreeze, etc)
2) endocrine disease (i.e. hypothyroidism, cushing's disease, etc)
3) organ dysfunction
4) heart disease that causes blood clot to brain
5) brain tumor
DEFINITELY get your dog to the vet and have her checked. Hopefully it is only epilepsy, but the vet should check her to make sure.
